Oxford City Korfball Club is a member of the British Korfball Association (BKA). The BKA deals with all korfball related issues that require regulation on a national level, such as national competitions, development of referees and coaches and promotion of the sport. One of its main roles is to continue to promote the sport in Britain.

IKF and the rules of korfball

The BKA itself is a member of the International Korfball Federation (IKF). This ensures that we are not just playing our local variation of korfball, but instead we are playing the emerging global sport that korfball is. The IKF is the institution that sets the rules of korfball, the BKA then distributes these rules among its member clubs.

National competitions

The BKA organises korfball competitions at a national level, this is primarily the National League, which is the competition one level higher than the Oxfordshire league. Hopefully, a level that OCKC will one day play at again! Furthermore, the BKA organises the BKA cup, a national cup competition, in which OCKC normally participates. In addition, the BKA organises non-club competitions; the counties championship, the inter-areas competition and the national championships for different age groups.

Publicity and development

The BKA has an important role in helping our sport grow. It does this by publicising the sport on a national level, for example on national radio or television, where possible. Importantly, the BKA offers vital support to new clubs that are starting out, where it offers both, financial and practical support. For example, new clubs can hire posts from the BKA for up to 3 years. The rates are very low for the first year of hire and gradually increasing. This is so that the club doesn’t have the added expense, when starting up, of having to purchase new equipment. Once the club is established, it should then be in a financial position to purchase its own.
