Oxford City 1 start campaign with win
Wednesday, 17 October 2007

On Sunday our first team opened its season with a 10-8 win against old rivals Abingdon 1.

New coach Paul Meaney instructed the team to play a straightforward basic style of korfball but to play it well. The largely renewed team picked up the message very well and dominated the first 25 minutes of the game. The first attack with Jo, Sue, Dave and Michiel created many chances in long lasting attacks. The shortest player of the division, Jo, managed to control the collect allowing for multi shot attacks. However, the others failed to convert only one of the many chances and the other division of Caroline, Gill, Clement and Mark started attacking at a score of 1-1. After some initial problems Clement and Mark gradually started to control the collect and good cooperation between Caroline and Gill resulted in two successful longshots from the latter: 3-1. From there on City managed to built on this lead and at half time the score was 6-2.

City started the second half well but as the match progressed and players started to become tired the concentration dropped and so did the quality of the passing. Both team kept exchanging goals several goals until Abingdon changed their tactics and managed to fight back to a two goal difference. Fortunately, City managed to keep the threat under control and a few more goals were exchanged thanks to accurate shooting from Dave and Caroline. The final score was 10-8 to City.

Goals:

Dave 4

Gill 3

Caroline 3
